Holiday Magic in Oakland County: A Guide to 2026 Christmas Parades & Events

by Leila Modetz

The holidays are one of my favorite times of year in northern Oakland County. Our downtowns go all out, and the parades are longtime local traditions. I've updated this guide with the 2026 dates for the parades and light displays closest to Oxford, Lake Orion, and Rochester, so you can plan your December weekends.

One tip before you go: dates and times come straight from each organizer, and weather can change plans. Check the organizer's page the week of the event.

Rochester Area Hometown Christmas Parade

πŸ“… Sunday, December 6, 2026
⏰ 2 PM
πŸ“ Downtown Rochester

This is the big one. The Rochester Regional Chamber of Commerce calls it the largest Christmas parade in Michigan, with more than 100 entries on a route of about a mile and a half. The parade starts at Tienken and Rochester Road and heads down Main Street, and you can watch anywhere along Rochester Road from Tienken to 3rd Street. This year's theme is "Winter Wonderland Wishes."

My advice: get there early and bring blankets and a thermos. Main Street fills up fast.

The Big, Bright Light Show in Downtown Rochester

πŸ“… Tuesday, November 24, 2026 – Sunday, January 17, 2027
⏰ Starting at 5 PM nightly
πŸ“ Main Street, Downtown Rochester

Hosted by the Rochester Downtown Development Authority, the Big, Bright Light Show is downtown Rochester's holiday light display. Because it runs for nearly two months, it's an easy evening outing: grab dinner downtown, then walk Main Street to see the lights.

Orion Lighted Christmas Parade

πŸ“… Saturday, December 5, 2026
⏰ 6 PM
πŸ“ Downtown Lake Orion

The Orion Area Parade Group puts on this lighted evening parade on the first Saturday of December, and 2026 marks its 31st year. Seeing the floats glow after dark in the village is something special. The organizers post a downloadable route map on their website, so take a look before you pick your spot, and dress warmly.

Oxford Christmas Parade

πŸ“… Saturday, December 5, 2026
⏰ 1 PM
πŸ“ Downtown Oxford

Oxford's parade, organized by the Oxford Chamber of Commerce, is a classic small-town celebration on a route of less than a mile through downtown. This year's theme is "Stars, Stripes & Christmas Lights: Oxford 150 & America 250!"

Here's a fun plan: because Oxford's parade is in the afternoon and Lake Orion's is that evening, you can catch both on December 5.

Why the Holidays Show Off Our Communities

When I work with buyers relocating to the area, I often tell them that a December visit is one of the best ways to get a feel for a town. You see how walkable each downtown is, where the local shops and restaurants are, and what kinds of community events happen through the year.

If you're curious about these towns, my guides go deeper:

You can also browse homes in each community on my Oxford, Lake Orion, and Rochester neighborhood pages.

Make Your Holiday Season Bright

Whether you're a longtime local or thinking about making northern Oakland County home, I hope you get out and enjoy these traditions this year.
