Why Luxury Relocation to Oakland County, Michigan Is a Strategic Move

by Leila Modetz

Across Michigan, few places balance refined living with everyday convenience the way Oakland County does. For luxury buyers relocating to Michigan, the county offers established estate communities, lakefront and acreage properties, nationally known schools and cultural institutions, and easy access to Detroit's business centers. Here is why luxury relocation to Oakland County is a strategic move, and how to choose the right part of the county for your lifestyle.

Oakland County by the Numbers

  • Population: about 1.27 million (2020 Census), making it Michigan's second most populous county.
  • Income: its 2020 median household income was the highest of any county in Michigan.
  • Lakes: the county has hundreds of lakes (387 by one count), which is why lakefront living is part of so many buyers' searches here.
  • Schools: about 40 public school districts, plus well-known private schools such as Cranbrook and The Roeper School.

Established Luxury: Birmingham and Bloomfield Hills

In the southern part of the county, Birmingham and Bloomfield Hills are the region's classic luxury addresses. Wealthy Detroiters began building summer and year-round homes in Bloomfield Hills more than a century ago, and the area remains known for estate homes and mature, tree-lined streets.

Bloomfield Hills is also home to Cranbrook Educational Community, a 319-acre campus designed largely by architect Eliel Saarinen and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1989. It includes Cranbrook Schools, the Cranbrook Academy of Art, the Cranbrook Institute of Science, and the Cranbrook Art Museum.

Space and Privacy: Northern Oakland County

For buyers who define luxury as land, water, and privacy, northern Oakland County is where I spend most of my time:

  • Oakland Township: large lots, custom homes, and nature preserves, served mostly by Rochester Community Schools. See Moving to Oakland Township.
  • Rochester and Rochester Hills: walkable downtown Rochester, Meadow Brook Hall, and an extensive trail network. See Moving to Rochester.
  • Lake Orion: island and lakefront homes on a 506-acre lake. See Living in Lake Orion.
  • Oxford: acreage, small-town charm, and the Polly Ann Trail. See Living in Oxford.
  • Just over the line in Lapeer County: Metamora's equestrian hunt country. See Southern Lapeer County.

Lifestyle and Culture

  • Shopping: Somerset Collection in Troy, plus boutique downtowns like Birmingham and Rochester.
  • Events: the Woodward Dream Cruise each August and Rochester's Big Bright Light Show each holiday season.
  • Culture: the Detroit Zoo in Royal Oak, Cranbrook's museums, and Meadow Brook Hall in Rochester Hills.
  • Higher education: Oakland University in Rochester Hills and Auburn Hills.

Getting Around

I-75, I-96, I-275, I-696, and M-1 (Woodward Avenue) connect the county to Detroit and the rest of the region. Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW) is in neighboring Wayne County, and Oakland County International Airport in Waterford serves private and charter flights, which matters to many executive relocators. Amtrak's Wolverine line also stops in Pontiac, Troy, and Royal Oak.

How to Approach a Luxury Relocation Here

  • Start with lifestyle, not just the house. Walkable downtown, lakefront, or acreage leads you to very different parts of the county.
  • Confirm school districts by address. With about 40 districts, lines rarely follow city names or ZIP codes.
  • Ask about off-market opportunities. Some high-end homes sell quietly, so working with a local agent who knows the market matters.

Whether you are drawn to an established enclave or a newer custom residence on acreage, Oakland County delivers depth and quality for discerning buyers.
